Hiring a sleep consultant can be a game-changer for your family's well-being. However, finding the right sleep consultant for your family is a big part of your success! Most sleep consultants start with an introduction call (industry wide called a Discovery Call) These calls are like interviews, for BOTH parties.

It's so important to use a consultant that you jive with! It can be an investment for your family both financially and with your time. It's crucial you hire someone you're happy to talk with on a day to day basis and one that aligns with your family.

If you're thinking about hiring a sleep consultant, here are ten essential questions you should ask them before making your decision to hire them:

1. What Sets You Apart from Other Consultants?

Every sleep consultant has a unique approach and philosophy. Some might focus on gentle sleep methods, which focuses more on sleep hygiene and while others might have a more structured approach. Ask potential consultants about their methodologies and why they use those methods. Understanding why they use the methods they do will help you understand what working with them and their process is going to look like. Understanding their work can help you find a consultant whose values align with your own.

2. How Is This Going to Be Different from What I've Already Tried?

It's common for parents to have tried various sleep training methods before seeking professional help. Ask the consultant how their approach differs from what you've already tried. They should be able to provide a clear explanation of their techniques and why they believe their method and program will be effective for your child and your family.

3. What Is Your Support Level and How Often Can I Ask Questions?

Support is a critical component of sleep training success. Find out how much support the consultant offers during the training period. Will they be available for daily check-ins? Can you reach them via phone, email, or text? Knowing the level of support available can give you peace of mind and ensure you're not navigating the process alone.

4. What Happens if we Run into Sleep Problems Down The Road?

Sleep training can take time, and questions may arise even after your initial consultation period. Ask the consultant about their follow-up support options. Some may offer extended support packages or additional consultations at a discounted rate. It's essential to know that you have access to help if needed beyond the initial period. Sleep is something you'll need to work on with your kiddos at lots of different ages and stages. Ask your consultant how they will prepare you in the future & what kinds of situations you might be facing.

5. What Is the Best Age to Sleep Train?

Sleep training can be effective at various stages of a child's development. However, the best age to start is very much family dependent. Sleep looks VERY different for families and how much support they have, how many children do they have? Are they back at work? Ask the consultant for their recommendations based on what's currently going on with your child? Are there any health situations you need to sort out before doing sleep training?

People often think sleep training is just for little ones. Ask your sleep consultant what age range they work with?

6. Is My Baby or Child Going to Cry?

Understanding the level of crying involved in sleep training is crucial for many parents. Ask the consultant about their approach to managing crying and how they handle situations where your child becomes distressed. Some methods involve more crying than others, some kids cry more then others and it's important to choose a method that you are comfortable with and that aligns with your parenting style.

7. Which Package Is Really Best for My Family?

Many sleep consultants offer various packages to cater to different needs and budgets. Discuss the options available and ask for recommendations on which package would be the most suitable for your family's situation. The consultant should be able to guide you based on your specific needs, whether it's a one-time consultation or a more comprehensive support plan.

8. What Are Your Credentials and Experience?

Experience and credentials can greatly influence the effectiveness of a sleep consultant. Inquire about their background, training, and any certifications they hold. A consultant with experience and relevant qualifications can provide more reliable and effective guidance.

9. Can You Provide References or Testimonials?

Hearing from other parents who have worked with the consultant can provide valuable insights into their effectiveness and style. Ask for references or read testimonials on their website. Positive feedback from other families can give you confidence in your choice. Most consultants will have a google profile, which is a great place to find reviews.

10. How Do You Customize Your Approach for Each Family?

Every family is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach may not be effective. Ask the consultant how they tailor their sleep training plans to meet the specific needs of each family. They should be able to provide examples of how they have adapted their methods for different situations.

Choosing the right sleep consultant is a crucial step toward achieving better sleep for your child and your family. By asking these ten questions, you can ensure that you find a consultant who aligns with your values, understands your unique needs, and provides the support necessary for a successful sleep training journey. Remember, the goal is to find a consultant who can offer a personalized approach that will work best for your family. Asking these questions will help you get to know your sleep consultant and ensure that you're going to get the support you want, and deserve.
